What is horsetail good for?

Thanks to its many properties (regenerative, astringent and diuretic), horsetail is used to treat a wide range of medical issues. It also has many uses in other fields, like aesthetics and agriculture.

Horsetail uses in medicine

Abscess – Prepare a horsetail envelope and place it over the affected area. Leave in place overnight or for several hours.

Adenoma – Prepare a horsetail envelope and place over the affected area 3 times a day, for 2 hours each time; while the treatment, the patient should remind lying in bed. The first one in the morning (after breakfast), the second one in the afternoon and the third one will be left overnight. The horsetail herbs for the envelopes can be overheated a couple of times. It’s also recommended to accompany the treatment with two cups of horsetail tea a day, one before breakfast and the other one before dinner.

Oral thrush – Make mouth washes gargling horsetail tea 4 times a day.

Tonsillitis – Gargle horsetail tea several times a day.

Arthritis and osteoarthritis – Drink 2 cups of horsetail tea a day, one before breakfast and the other one before dinner. Also it is recommended to take a horsetail sitz bath once a month.

Bronchitis – Drink 2 to 3 cups of horsetail tea a day, taking sips throughout the day.

Stomach cramps – To stop the cramps, prepare a horsetail envelope and place over the aching area.

Bladder stones – To expel the stones, drink 1 or 2 cups of horsetail tea a day, as well as taking a sitz bath. When feeling the urge to pee, try holding it as much as possible and then doing it with pressure.



Cystitis – Take a horsetail steam bath. Later you can use the infused herbs to make an envelope to put over the bladder. During the treatment drink 2 to 3 cups of tea a day.

Depression - Taking horsetail sitz baths may help.

Breathing difficulties – If it’s caused by an ill liver, prepare a horsetail envelope and place over the liver area over night.

Ovarian pain – Put a horsetail envelope over the ovaries to calm severe pain.

Menstrual pains – Drink 2 to 3 cups of horsetail a day, to calm the cramps by improving the blood circulation.

Edema – Drink 2 cups of horsetail tea a day for its diuretic properties.

Emphysema – When this symptom is due to an ill liver, it’s beneficial to prepare a horsetail envelope and place on the liver area, leaving it overnight or for several hours.

Rash – Clean the affected area with a horsetail infusion for washing.

Sprained ankle – Take a horsetail foot bath to reduce the swelling.

Fistula – Take regular horsetail sitz baths and overnight cover the area with envelopes made with the remaining herbs.

Gingivitis – Gargle with horsetail tea 4 times a day to treat the bleeding gums.

Bleeding (stomach, lungs, uterus, etc) – drinking 2 to 3 cups of horsetail tea a day can help to stop the bleeding, thanks to its hemostatic properties.

Hemorrhoids – Drink 2 to 3 cups of horsetail tea throughout the day in case of bleeding hemorrhoids.

Wounds – Clean the wounds with a horsetail infusion for washing, to stop the bleeding and heal it.

Onychitis – Prepare a horsetail infusion for washing and clean the affected area with it, the used herbs can be used to make an envelope to cover it afterwards. A foot bath may also help.

Osteoporosis – Drink horsetail tea daily to help improve bone density by helping the body to absorb and set the calcium.

Memory loss – Taking a horsetail tea daily may help when the memory loss is caused by a lack of silica in the body.

Kidney or bladder stones – To increase and help to expel the stones, drink 2 to 3 cups of horsetail a day.

Rheumatism – To protect yourself of this disease, drink one cup of horsetail a day.

Chilblains – Take a horsetail foot bath daily to improve blood circulation.

Sweaty feet – Take a horsetail foot bath or apply its tincture on the feet every day, to help reduce the sweating and therefore the smell. Accompany the treatment with a daily cup of tea. You can also prepare a deodorant by mixing a cold infusion with a few drops of vinegar.

Excessive underarm sweating – Make a deodorant by mixing a cold horsetail tea with a few drops of vinegar. Apply with a cotton ball.

Blood vomiting – When it’s caused by a bleeding stomach, drinking 2 to 3 cups of horsetail a day may help, thanks to its hemostatic property.

Sprains and broken bones – Drink horsetail tea daily to strengthen and regenerate the bones and connective tissue.

In aesthetics

Acne – Make a horsetail tea and let it cool. Apply with a cotton ball after cleansing your face at night. Avoid the eyes area.

Weight loss – Taking horsetail tea regularly helps losing weight by removing the excess liquid from the body. It also eliminates toxins, so it helps the body recover its balance.

Wrinkles – Take a daily cup of horsetail to fight wrinkles.

Stretch marks – Prepare horsetail envelopes and put over the affected area for 15minutes. Also drink one cup of tea a day.
